Political Science Computer Lab

Ross Hall, Room 10

This lab is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Welcome to the homepage for the Political Science Computer Lab. Below are some instructions about Lab operations, but it’s important to know about the origin, purpose, availability, and usage of the Lab.

The Lab, located in 10 Ross Hall, was created in July 2002 through a generous grant from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Computer Advisory Committee (LASCAC). It continues to receive funding from LASCAC on a year-to-year basis, and the Department has enhanced its operation with such support. The educational purposes of the Lab are threefold (a) to enhance the quality of our current computer-based courses; (b) to move the Department in the direction of developing more such technologically based courses; and (c) to enable all ISU students ready access to high-quality computing facilities.

The Lab currently consists of ten workstations equipped with Dell computers and the latest software (including Stata and SPSS for statistical analyses). The Lab is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the academic year and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the summer months.

The use of the Lab has increased dramatically since its inception and currently averages about 200 users per week. While over one-third of the recent users have come from Political Science, students from other disciplines (including English, History, Psychology, Art and Design, Pre-Business, Spanish, Biology, and Journalism and Mass Communications) are Lab users. All ISU students are invited to utilize the Political Science Computer Lab. Welcome!

Printing

  • If your document does not print, make sure that you have the correct printer selected after clicking "File" and then "Print".  The correct option is the "Ross 10 Laser."
  • The "Microsoft Office Document Image Writer" creates a file similar to Adobe's PDF format.  It will not send your document to any printer.

  • When possible, print PDF documents with multiple pages on each sheet.  Ask the monitor for help if you are unsure how to do this.

Files

  • You may also access your network files with FileZilla FTP client.  Before running the program, find the FileZilla folder under the Windows Start menu and click the icon titled "Initialize Filezilla for me".  You will have to do this the first time you use any public lab computer on campus.
  • Our systems are all equipped with USB ports for flash drives and CD-RW drives.
  • Some computers have DVD-ROM drives as well.  Ask the monitor if you need one of these and cannot locate them.
  • If you need any assistance saving or retrieving files, ask the monitor.
