Requirements for a Minor in Political Science
2007-2009 Catalog
(Expires end of Summer Session 2013)
The study of political science is designed to enable students to become
familiar with theories of public values and patterns of political
systems -- national, regional and international. A political science
minor will enable students in other fields of enquiry to gain some
essential knowledge about this discipline. A minor in political science
is especially useful for those students who are majoring in the other
social sciences (anthropology, economics, psychology and sociology)
and the humanities (history or philosophy), but it is also useful
for students who seek careers in law, business, engineering, or the
physical or biological sciences. As an individual gains knowledge
of these fields and disciplines, they will increasingly recognize
that political phenomena have an impact directly on them. A minor
in political science is, therefore, one important way to begin to
understand the interrelationship between these fields and the political
arena.
A student minoring in Political Science is required to complete a
minimum of 15 credits beyond the 100-level in Political Science. At
least 9 of those credits must be in courses numbered 300 or above.
Students minoring in Political Science normally will be expected to
take at least 9 credits in Political Science coursework at Iowa State
University. Only 3 credits of Pol S 490 or Pol S 499, alone or in
combination, and only 2 credits of Pol S 312-315 may be included in
the total of 15 credits required for the minor. All minors in the
College of Liberal Arts & Sciences require a minimum of 6 credits
in courses numbered 300 and above taken at ISU with a grade of C or
higher. Credits earned in Pol S 499, which is offered on a Satisfactory/Fail
basis only, will not fulfill this requirement.
