Van
Houweling receives award from LAS
Douglas Van Houweling, a 1965 government graduate from Iowa State University,
has been named the inaugural recipient of the John V. Atanasoff Research
and Discovery Award from Iowa State's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
(LAS).
Van Houweling received the award during the LAS Alumni
Awards ceremony during Homecoming 2005.
When the Internet was only a research project funded by
the Department of Defense, a group of individuals, including Van Houweling
were instrumental in developing a partnership between the state higher
education networking organization in Michigan and IBM, MCI and the State
of Michigan to from the first large scale production Internet in the
world. This system ultimately served several million students, faculty
and university staff.
Now the president and CEO of Internet 2, Van Houweling leads an organization
that today serves more than 250 universities and research laboratories,
schools in 40 states and over 60 corporations. A network that allows
users to connect to one another as well as to their colleagues in more
than 40 countries around the world - providing global leadership in
the development of tomorrow's Internet.
Van Houweling is the co-author of Higher Education
in the Digital Age and is the recipient of the EDUCAUSE 2002 Excellence
in Leadership Award. He currently serves on the board of Adaptec, Altarum,
Advanced Network and Services, CyberMichigan and Merit Network.
